It started as a small political march of people. Now, 49 years later, the Chicago Pride Parade boasts an estimated one million people in attendance each year. The first Chicago Pride march was one of three around the country that was held to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall uprising in New York City. Some demonstrators continued on to what is now Daley Plaza. You name the group, they have a parade.

The event had a particular significance this year, coming 25 years after the decriminalisation of homosexuality in Ireland and a week after an official apology from Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to the men who were convicted under the law.
WorldPride draws record-high parade attendees on historic anniversary
This year, New York is the host of WorldPride, the first time that an American city has hosted the international drive for LGBTQ equality, leading to an even bigger influx of international visitors than years past. From there it heads south before turning west at 8th Street, making its way past the Stonewall Monument, and then heading north on 7th Avenue until it disperses around 23rd Street. Last year over diverse groups took place in the parade—from non-profits to community organizers to political candidates—in what was one of the largest marches in history.
New York City turned a sea of rainbow colors Sunday as several million people flooded the streets to celebrate WorldPride, including a record number of parade participants, organizers said. The huge spectacular — billed as the biggest LGBTQ demonstration and celebration in the world — saw the city swamped with extravagant outfits and noise from constant cheering. Parade organizers said there were about ,, or twice the usual number, of participants marching down Fifth Avenue this year, easily the most ever.
